According to the newest research, one simple method can help you know in what condition is your heart. Specifically, the health experts suggest that if you are flexible enough to reach your toes, then your heart is in good shape too.
The Heart and Circulatory Physiology Journal published an article in which they explain that you can very easy test the condition of your heart by simply touching your toes.
The method is very simple. You just need to sit on the floor with your legs and feet stretched forward, and your toes pointing up. Reach out with your hands and try to touch the tip of your toes. If your body is so flexible that you can touch your toes, it shows that your heart is healthy and flexible as well.
Researchers from the University of North Texas and Japanese conducted a study in which they involved 526 participants aged from 20 to 83. The participants first performed the test for body suppleness where as were measured their blood pressure, heart activity and arteries. When the study has ended, the researchers found a connection between the artery elasticity and the body, especially in participants aged over 40.
The explanation was that people who couldn’t reach the end of their toes in fact had stiff blood vessels, indicating a worsened heart state and an increased risk of heart disease. The Japanese researcher Dr. Yamamo to said, “If you can touch your toes while sitting straight, your heart is still quite good. But if you cannot, maybe you need to go to a cardiologist.”
The stiffness of the leg muscles and on the back has been connected to stiffness of the heart vessels as they have the same collagen composition.
Anyway, the doctor states that stiff muscles don’t have to mean that are a sign of heart disease.
